I started a junior board for young professionals, which supports children and adults with Autism, 5 years ago. I remember the exact moment I had the idea: I was attending the Giant Steps Annual Auction and they showed a video illustrating a “day in the life” of a student there. All of a sudden, I am sobbing and turned to my Mom and said: “I have to help”. And, with that, a junior board was born.
Though my time as President of the Giant Steps Junior Board is coming to a close, the desire and passion to give back is just getting started. I believe, so deeply, that young professionals need to learn how to participate and support their community – whatever or wherever their community is. You don’t have to have deep pockets to make a difference; you don’t have to change the world to change someone’s life; you don’t have to wait for someone else to be the difference you want to see in the world – you can be that difference, and I promise you, the place your heart will go … ohhhh, my oh my … there’s no feeling like it.
There’s a Darius Rucker song called, “If I Had Wings”. I listen to it every time I need to be reminded of how much a role philanthropy plays in my life. The line I say over and over to myself, almost every day, is this: “What will I leave that will go on forever; and what can I do while I am here to make someone’s life better”.
Now, it’s your turn to ask yourself these questions. Leave a comment for me and let me know how you’re going to pay it forward, or what you're currently doing to change your piece of the world!
