You’re allowed to grow, too. Make time to nurture yourself during life’s transitions.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: parents are absolute heroes. Still, trying to raise your little ones up into great human beings, can be completely consuming. Especially when children are young, it’s so easy to lose track of who you are inside, because you’re so focused on being the greatest guiding star you can be. Of course, you love your child with all your heart but remember: You need (and deserve!) some love, too. 

When it comes to carving out time in your schedule, make sure to leave some room for yourself. Whether it’s to reflect, relax, recharge—or all three—you’re working your butt off, give yourself permission to hand over the reins for a moment and focus on you. Self-care isn’t selfish. 

Why Moms Need Self-Care

The stresses of parenting are real. According to the Pew Research Center, 77 percent of adults say women face significant pressure to be perceived as an involved parent. That pressure can really take a toll on moms. Soon you’re doing everything you can to have and be it all, but in that race, you’re not being you. 

That’s why making time for yourself is so important—for mothers who stay-at-home and those who work elsewhere, alike. Whether it’s recharging your batteries with a long nap or massage, pursuing your passions, treating yourself to a day at the salon or simply just indulging your interests—taking the time to honor who you are as an individual is key to feeling your best. And, when you’re feeling your best, you can parent your best. 

Give Yourself Some Space

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder—and it can give you a clearer head, too. It’s completely OK to move at your own pace in your parenting journey, and to do what you need to do to be confident in your decisions. Sometimes distance actually gives you the space you need to recognize how awesome you are. No one is perfect, but taking the time to reflect on all the positives will help you feel comfortable in your choices. It’s easier said than done, but try not to compare your journey to another mom’s—what works for one family might not work for the next! But often, it’s that getting a little bit of space from a situation, and a little bit of time for yourself, that helps us see that. 

So, please, take an hour or two “off” from parenting every once in a while. Even though, you’re never completely off the clock, do something that takes your mind off mom duties for a little while and lets you be you. Trust me, girl: feel confident in your parenting choices and know that you are slaying this whole mom thing. A bubble bath and kids-free lunch with girlfriends have your name written on it.
