5 of the best educational apps for children

The “relaxing” days of swimming pools and summer camps are coming to a close and it’s time to go back to school. I know, you can’t contain your excitement! To help your kids get their brains off of cotton candy and carnivals, I have a list of educational apps to try out before it’s officially time for that first day of classes.

Try not to feel guilty about the screen time. Apps designed with education in mind typically involve games for children that allow curious kids to win, lose and learn all in the palm of their hand. Here are a few of my favorites.

5 Best Educational Apps for Children

The Cat in the Hat Builds That by PBS KIDS

Within the Cat in the Hat world, players use science and engineering concepts to progress through the game. Cat in the Hat Builds That gets children to build bridges, explore friction and sort objects alongside classic characters like Cat in the Hat, Sally and Nick. Plus, the app meets many national education standards in science, engineering and child development.

Bedtime Math by Bedtime Math Foundation

For many families, reading a bedtime story is a daily routine. But what about math? When I was a kid, I couldn’t stand math class––it just didn’t click for me and I hated having to practice it! This app makes it easy for kids to brush up on their skill in a way that’s way more fun and engaging than a textbook. The Math Problem of the Day is available in three levels: Wee ones, little kids and big kids. Bonus: Bedtime Math is proven to significantly boost children’s math scores and decrease math anxiety in parents!

KidECook by Chocolapps

This is a really fun one! In a virtual kitchen, children learn while preparing snacks and meals. KidECook teaches children about following the rules, weights, measurements and how to create different dishes. The recipes in the game use household foods, making it possible for your child to replicate the dish in real life if they’re interested. That means they’re learning a bit of math, science and some great life skills! Recommended for children ages four and up, KidECook is available for $0.99 on iOS and Android.

Moose Math by Duck Duck Moose

Moose Math follows the “Dust Funnies” through five levels of counting, addition, subtraction, sorting and geometry. Kids get rewarded for each activity as they work to build their own city and decorate the buildings. Using kindergarten and first-grade math, children are introduced to concepts based on Common Core State Standards in education. I love this app because it combines the technical side of math with creativity and imagination.
